Finding a Job Using the Web to Succeed

The Internet offers huge opportunities for a job seeker, but also presents several possible challenges. It also adds great complexities, and a lot more things to consider…and be careful of.

Job search needs to be thought of as a personal, extremely aimed marketing process where you are the product. Your resume is an ad. Your extended network of associates is your lead generating machine.

So where does the internet fit in? At AA-Careers, we just posted a job on Craigslist and got 600 plus applications in a week. For one opening. That’s increased job hunting competition.

Had a strong candidate contacted us before we ran the posting, they could have secured the position before having all that competition. How? By finding someone who knows an employee at our office who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone knew about of the job for at least 12 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?

Be careful to check your application materials thoroughly before submitting them. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily taken out with a quick triage process. How? The same way any HR professional would. By eliminating resumes where the objective didn’t match our job description. By eliminating prospects whose cover letters gave us grounds not to employ them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating candidates whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by passing over job hunters who didn’t trouble to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the great news is that job boards give you a feel of what companies are hiring, and for what kinds of positions. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still try, if you have a well thought out resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another issue to be aware of is how quickly and easily you can be checked out on the web. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some personal web pages that were in questionable taste. Nothing larcenous, but enough to swing our thinking about who to choose.

AA-Careers provides a all-inclusive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

What Countries Are Currently "Hot" as International Markets?

In the past years, big and highly developed countries dominated the international markets. Nowadays, however, the trend has gone to the other side as the favor is on emerging markets and developing countries.

In 2007, China was one of the major international markets, even when various issues regarding product quality came out. This year, lesser known markets are favored. In the field of real estate, Thailand and some Eastern European countries are believed to inspire positive investment growth.

India is expected to be one of the most sought after retailing markets of 2008. Its strength is based on the size of its market and the fact that the country has more relaxed laws and rules with regard to foreign ownership. Russia and Ukraine are also heavily favored because of reasons related to their rapid economic growth. Ukraine’s location is also a big plus since investors favor places near Russia. Less widely followed countries like Kazakhstan are also considered hot markets because they offer excellent opportunities for high returns and business growth.

Other countries that rank high in the international market list include Vietnam, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Taiwan, and Mexico.

Setting up international markets in emerging and developing countries has become the new business trend because of the presence of growth in consumer spending; and because of the increase of the number of middle class consumers.
