Design is Critical in Meeting Health and Safety Standards in Construction

On 21st May, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be conducting a seminar for designers at the University Hospital in North Staffordshire in order to evolve methods to prevent the daily health and safety problems faced by workers in the construction industry. The designers have been requested by the HSE to attend the conference as it has been observed that they are not giving sufficient attention to the reduction of health and safety risks. The seminar will provide critical insights into meeting the health and safety requirements for the designers.

More than two million workers are engaged by the construction industry in Britain, making it the biggest British industry. However, it is also far more hazardous than other industries. According to the HSE, designers can help significantly in mitigating the health and safety risks faced by the industry. They can address these problems in the beginning of the construction phase and prevent the extra costs involved in making these changes later.

According to Cheryl Eeles, Health and Safety Awareness Officer, a huge contribution can be made by the designers in decreasing the health problems and physical harm faced by the workers. In order to develop the health and safety standards, and increase collaboration on these issues, a cross industry partnership called Working Well Together (WWT) was formed ten years back, and the initiative will also play an important role in the seminar.

Ms. Eeles stressed that it is important to follow good working practices not only to remove the problems and risks faced by the workers but also to benefit in terms of productivity, and to boost the feeling of pride amongst workers.

Now more than ever all employers especially in potentially dangerous businesses such as construction must be fully aware of health and safety issues and train their staff thoroughly to avoid the serious potential consequences.
